Kolkata: Monday acid test for cops before Lockgate flyover tidal traffic call

Demolition work in progress in the city
KOLKATA: The city police is planning tidal movement of traffic along the Chitpore Lockgate flyover to serve the peakhour Tallah traffic if the oneway (north-bound) plan fails on Monday.
On Sunday, only north-bound traffic was allowed on the flyover.

Since majority of commuters (office- or school-bound) travels from north (Sinthee) to south (Shyambazar and further south to Dalhousie) during the morning peaks hours, the plan is to turn traffic on Chitpore flyover from north to south from 6am to 1pm and from south to north between 1pm and 10pm to serve the home-bound traffic.
Police officers on Monday will also meet the engineers of Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC), the custodian of Lockgate flyover, to gauge whether both-way traffic can be run along the two-lane flyover. Traffic police said that buses are now using the 1.2km flyover connecting Bagbazar in south and Chiria More in north.
Traffic police officers said there was heavy rush of southbound traffic along the Chiria More-Dum Dum Road-Northern Avenue-Belgachhia Road-R G Kar Road even on Sunday. Till noon, the route was chock-a-block on the first day after the closure of Tallah Bridge. A good number of commuters was moving along Tallah Bridge in light vehicles and autos.
If there is complete collapse of traffic on Monday, we have to think of Plan B and Plan C.
Meanwhile, keeping in mind the chaos after the collapse of Majerhat bridge, Kolkata Police is deploying a huge force in the area. The joint commissioner, traffic, Santosh Pandey, and deputy commissioner, Rupesh Kumar, will be monitoring the overall management. Fifteen traffic sergeants have been brought in from various other departments. Seventy additional police personnel and four inspectors, with prior knowledge of managing traffic in this region, will also be posted.
Besides, 100 additional police personnel will be deployed to look after law and order situation. Kolkata Police has already notified to do away with on-road parking all along the alternative routes. Special vans will be used to tow away parked vehicles. “We have to ensure faster dispersal of peak-hour traffic. This is why we are trying to keep all the roads free from obstacles,” said an officer.
