Kanpur: In a novel initiative, IG Kanpur Mohit Agarwal on Monday visited Karthia village of Farrukhabad and felicitated 14-year-old Anjali, one of those 23 children, who were abducted in Farrukhabad. She had saved the life of the abducted children by disconnecting the wire from the explosive and then closed the door from inside.
The IG also felicitated other villagers who assisted the police in saving the lives of 23 children. He also distributed gifts to all the village
kids, including 23 kids, who were held hostage.
The IG said the initiative will also inspire others. “We have felicitated Anjali and other villagers with ‘Prashastra Patra’ as a token of appreciation as their heroic act will inspire others,” the IG said and added, “Little girl Anjali showed exemplary courage to save 22 kids.”
The villagers have welcomed the initiative.
The IG said he has also asked the district administration to recommend Anjali’s name for a bravery award.
Earlier, villagers of Karthia organized a grand welcome of the IG. They arranged for a band party and took out a procession across the village on Monday.
Gauri’s father Subhash Batham, who had taken 23 children hostage in Katheria village of Farrukhabad, was shot dead during the police operation on Thursday night. Her mother Ruby, too, was killed after she was assaulted by angry villagers. Subhash had invited the children on the pretext of celebrating Gauri’s birthday and held them hostage in the basement of his house.
Facing four criminal cases, Subhash had served a 12-year sentence in a 2002 murder case. He was recently in jail in a theft case and was released a few weeks ago. Police said that Subhash had plotted the hostage drama to settle scores with those he accused of framing him in the murder case.
On Sunday, UP Police has come forward to adopt their one-year-old daughter. IG Mohit Agarwal had told TOI that the police department would bear Gauri’s educational and all other expenses till she became self-reliant.
