Mayawati to skip Shaheen Bagh in her Delhi rallies

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati will step in the poll cauldron of the high-stake assembly elections in Delhi by addressing a rally in Talkatora stadium on Monday. Mayawati, who has been highly critical of both the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress, is contesting the Delhi assembly elections without getting into an alliance. In the 2015 assembly elections too, the BSP had contested all the 70 assembly seats in Delhi, but failed to win a single seat. It had fetched just 1.30% votes.

Mayawati to address election rally in Delhi today

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati is slated to address an election rally here at Talkatora stadium on Monday. "BSP is contesting the Delhi Assembly elections without forging an alliance with any party," read a press release from the party. The voting for the Delhi Assembly is scheduled to take place on February 8. The counting will begin on February 11.

Sharing the stage in north Delhi’s Burari with Union home minister Amit Shah, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday said that AAP government had done no work in the last five years and only made tall promises. “There hasn’t been any real development here. If you take a look at Burari, the condition here is the same as that in Bihar in 2005, before NDA ... They (AAP government) talk about water supply, but there’s no water. Roads, electricity ... nothing is in good shape. What work have they done?” he asked, while addressing a rally.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath continued his diatribe against chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for the second consecutive day alleging about relations between AAP and Pakistan, while also questioning the real motive behind the protests at Shaheen Bagh. Yogi arrived almost two hours late in both the public meetings scheduled at Harkesh Nagar and Jaitpur, which are just a few kilometres away from Shaheen Bagh.

Congress promises free power, jobless allowance and more

Congress on Sunday released its freebies-loaded manifesto titled Aisi Hogi Hamari Dilli — Congress Wali Dilli-Khushhal Dilli, which included 300 units electricity and 20,000 litres water for free, unemployment allowance of Rs 5,000 for graduates and Rs 7,500 for postgraduates and layoff compensation up to Rs 5,000 every month. The party has promised to open 100 Indira canteens offering subsidised meals at Rs 15, free metro and bus ride for people aged above 65 and subsidised fare for women, students and senior citizens.

BJP lost Vishwas Nagar ka vishwas, says CM Arvind Kejriwal

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that the development of Vishwas Nagar assembly constituency had suffered because the BJP MLA did not let AAP government work in the area. The East Delhi constituency was one of the three assembly seats that BJP won in the last assembly polls.

After the daylong programme, Shah and Nadda, among other party seniors, visited election offices of party candidates in different constituencies and reviewed the poll preparedness. Shah visited the offices of party candidates in Timarpur, Adarsh Nagar, Shalimar Bagh and Rohini. Nadda went to Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, New Delhi and Jangpura constituencies.

On Sunday, as part of a mass-contact programme, over 1 lakh BJP workers — besides Union home minister Amit Shah and party national president JP Nadda — knocked on the doors of houses in all the 70 assembly constituencies of the city. While Shah visited different areas in Delhi Cantonment and canvassed for BJP candidate Manish Singh, Nadda campaigned for Shikha Rai in Greater Kailash.

Party insiders said they expected close to 50,000 people to attend the rally. PM’s second rally will be held on Tuesday in Dwarka. BJP has mounted an aggressive campaign at the ground level and, till now, the party claims to have held over 4,000 public meetings across the city. The Shaheen Bagh standoff has dominated the speeches of BJP functionaries, who have sought to target chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on various fronts. Union minister Anurag Thakur and West Delhi MP Parvesh Sahib Singh have been temporarily banned from campaigning after Election Commission found that their speeches had violated the model code of conduct.

PM to address back-to-back rallies in Delhi as campaign enters final phase

With campaigning for Delhi elections set to end on February 6, PM Narendra Modi will address the first of his two rallies in Delhi on Monday. The event, to be held at CBD ground in east Delhi’s Karkardooma, will have the presence of all 20 party candidates from the 10 assembly segments each in east and northeast Delhi.
