CHENNAI: Police arrested eight people on Sunday for hunting wilflife in a forest area close to
Tiruvallur. The men are members of the
Chennai Rifle Club,
Egmore.
Around 2am on Sunday, a patrol team led by special sub-inspector Surendra Kumar heard noises coming from an abandoned hut at Valasai Vetti Kadu near Manavala Nagar in Tiruvallur. When the policemen ventured in, they found eight men busy cooking. They came across a cache of rifles and ammunition inside the hut. During questioning, the men told police that they were members of the rifle club and had been hunting in the area.
Surendra informed the Manavala Nagar police who arrived at the spot and arrested the men. They were identified as K Sunil Karunakaran, 39, of Kancheepuram, D Babu, 51, of Chintadripet, K Ramesh, of Chitlapakkam, K Arul Kumar, 25, of Valasai Vetti Kadu, N Silambarasan, 30, of Ayanavaram, M Boobalan, 31, of Korattur, M Gnanamurthy, 27, of Mambakkam and O P Thangaraj, 35, of Chengalpet.
Police seized four rifles, pellets, flash lights, seven knives and two cars from the men. The men had licences for the guns. Police registered a case under Arms Act for using licensed weapons to hunt animals and birds. An investigation officer said the team seized half-cooked meat from the hut. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the meat may be that of a peacock. Police have handed over the meat to forest department officials for tests. Further investigations are on.
