BAREILLY: Baradari police on Sunday morning recovered a huge consignment of gunpowder from a
UPSRTC bus at Satellite bus stand during routine checking.
Acting on a tip-off, police seized five sacks of gunpowder weighing about 250 kg, which was kept in the Pilibhit-bound bus by an unidentified man at
Farukkhabad.
During interrogation, bus driver Manish and conductor Sudheer Kumar revealed that the sacks were kept by an unidentified man who had informed them that another person would be waiting at Pilibhit bus stand to receive the consignment, police said.
A fire cracker manufacturer has been named as the supplier of the gunpowder. Two police teams have been sent to Farukkhabad and Pilibhit on the instructions of SSP Shailesh Pandey to nab the main supplier and the receiver of gunpowder. The gunpowder has been sent for lab testing.
Additional SP Abhishek Verma told TOI, "We have recovered nearly 250 kilograms of low-quality explosives from a Pilibhit bound UPSRTC bus. The explosive material was loaded at Farukkhabad and prima facie, it looks like the explosive material is meant for manufacturing firecrackers. Such explosives are dangerous and cannot be carried in a public transport vehicle. Our ATS team also arrived in Bareilly and checked the explosive powder. The local intelligence unit and ATS are also investigating with us. The driver and the conductor of the bus are detained and an FIR would be registered against them soon. It was a huge consignment of gunpowder and minor mistake could have risked the lives of passengers travelling in the bus."
