Three adults and two young children who vanished after a day trip in the outback on Sunday have been found.

Police launched a desperate search after Steve Sutton, his cousin Charles May, Mr Charles' partner Nikki and two children aged two and nine-months-old failed to return from a trip to Lake Surprise in central Northern Territory on Sunday.

There were grave fears for the family's safety as heavy rain has lashed the region in recent days.

A NT Police spokeswoman confirmed to Daily Mail Australia the group were located and recovered just after 5pm on Monday.

'They were travelling to Lake Surprise when they became bogged in their vehicle,' a statement later read.

'Recent weather in the Barkly region has flooded local roads and creeks and police hold concerns for the group as it is unknown what, if any provisions were taken,' a police statement read.

Mr May posted a series of videos of the wild weather in Tennant Creek on Saturday afternoon, including a 21-minute live video of him driving through flooded roads, NT News reported.

Police launched a widespread search via motorbikes four-wheel drives and a rescue helicopter through the area 20 kilometres south-west of Tennant Creek on Monday.

The missing group were travelling in a white Toyota Dual Cab Hilux and maroon Mazda Bravo ute.

Friends and family later reported on social media later that police had made contact with the missing group and were communicating with them via two-way radio.

'They have been located, we are waiting for them to be flown in,' one woman wrote.

Police have used the incident to remind people to be cautious and prepared for adverse conditions when travelling in the outback.

'Travellers and visitors to Central Australia and the Barkly region are reminded to avoid travelling to remote areas during inclement weather, and always make sure someone knows of your departure and intended return times,' the statement read.
