As govt divides, our duty is to unite people: Yogendra Yadav

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The country is presently going through an unforeseen movement, a movement to unite the people. When the BJP-led Union government wants to divide the people, “our responsibility is to unite the people”, said psephologist and politician-activist Yogendra Yadav.
“The implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is unprecedented in the country and we never expected a Union government to divide people in the name of religion,” said Yadav, who was in the city to campaign against CAA.
“This move by the Centre has united the people the same way we stood up for our freedom struggle. The protest has become a national movement of unity. This is the first time that strong protests have taken place, especially by students and youths,” he said, while participating at the meet-the -press programme organised by Kerala Union of Working Journalists.
Yadav is of the opinion that the main purpose of implementing CAA is to classify people in the country as firstand second-grade citizens. “The CAA is not for taking the citizenship away from citizens. But it is to create two categories of people in the country. So the Centre is trying to signal the people about this classification. The combination of CAA, NRC and NPR is a deadly weapon,” Yadav said.
There is enormous pressure on the national media and judiciary to suppress anti-CAA protests. But Kerala is an exception. He also appreciated the state government for its resolution against CAA.
Yadav clarified that he was not interested in Delhi elections and his focus is on anti-CAA campaign. “But one thing is for sure, BJP is losing and they are trying to trigger communalism in Delhi as they are now desperate to win,” Yadav said.
He flayed the Union Budget as a declaration of war on farmers. “The Union finance minister said in the budget speech that the government has proposed 40 points to improve the agriculture sector in the country. However, she had not allocated a single paisa for these projects. When I read the budget allocations, none of the farming sectors has got good allocations. So it was just an eyewash by the minister,” Yadav said.
