MEERUT: A 16-year-old
rape survivor was attacked with acid allegedly by family members of the accused in
Hapur on Sunday morning. She has sustained burn injuries in her leg and is currently under medical observation. Her family claimed that the family of the accused were pressuring them to withdraw the rape case.
Family of the survivor has claimed that the accused have been pressuring them to strike a compromise in the rape case. "The family of the accused was threatening us for an out-of-court settlement. When we refused, they attacked us and threw acid on the girl. They were armed with lathis and fire arms, and attacked other family members as well," a relative of the survivor said.
Several other family members of the victim were also attacked have sustained injuries in varying degrees. Based on their complaint, an FIR was filed against three named accused - Muneer, Tariq and Nooruddin - and other unidentified accused at Babugarh police station in Hapur. "No arrests have been made, but a few people have been apprehended," a sleuth investigating the case said.
Police claimed that the girl had accused two of her neighbours of rape in June 2019.
Later, an FIR was filed in September against Dilshad and Muneer. Based on the investigation, police pressed charges against Dilshad who was arrested and is currently in jail and gave clean chit to Muneer.
As per police, the brawl ensued on Sunday morning between the family of the rape survivor and the accused over throwing of garbage.
"At around 6 am, the two families confronted each other over throwing of garbage. The altercation which began with women from the respective families soon swelled into full-blown brawl after men from both sides joined in," ASP Sarvesh Mishra said.
Staff at district hospital has confirmed that the girl has suffered burn injuries caused by acid.
Her other family members who were injured in the attack were also provided medical aid.
"The condition of the victim is stable. Circumstances under which the minor rape victim was attacked with acid is being probed," the ASP said.
