Surat: Video of drunk BJP councillor dancing goes viral

SURAT: In a major embarrassment for the Surat city BJP, a senior councillor from ward 19 was caught on the camera dancing in an inebriate state at a function held in Nargol near Umbergaon in Valsad.
The video of Piyush Jariwala alias Piyush Shivshaktiwala, a BJP councillor from Sagrampura, had gone viral on the social media platform where he is seen dancing with his friends and that the liquor bottles are seen in the background.
Following the controversy, the city BJP president Nitin Bhajiawala issued a show cause notice to Piyush Jariwala for giving a clarification on the video.
Talking to TOI, Bhajiawala said, “A notice has been issued to Jariwala for clarifying his position. I talked with him over phone after receiving the video and he stated that it was very old and it was shot during a community function.”
Sources in the party said that Jariwala belongs to the Khatri community and it is a custom to offer liquor to the guests. In some local communities hailing from Surat, people offer a glass of liquor even during the marriage functions and at funerals.
Bhajiawala said, “On Monday he left for Mumbai to see off his family members at the airport. He is expected to return in a day or two. He will meet us to clarify his position.”
When contacted, Jariwala said, “This video is very old and I don’t know who shot it and made it viral on social media. However, I have health issues and have the liquor permit. I consume liquor regularly. In our community drinking liquor is very common.”
