Delhi polls: AAP asks EC to ban Yogi Adityanath from campaigning, demands FIR

Yogi Adityanath
NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday urged the Election Commission to ban UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath from campaigning in Delhi. AAP MP Sanjay Singh also demanded an FIR against Yogi for his alleged provocative remarks during his whirlwind election campaigns.
In a memorandum submitted to EC on Sunday, AAP stated that the UP CM had acted in gross violation of the model code of conduct by "making objectionable statements with the sole intention of spreading religious hatred" by associating chief minister Arvind Kejriwal with the statement of a federal minister of Pakistan. Yogi had also accused the AAP government of "supplying biryani to the Shaheen Bagh protesters".
AAP said Yogi's remarks were "divisive" and "aimed at aggravating existing differences and creating mutual hatred between communities".
The memorandum also pointed out that BJP's actions provoking enmity and spreading hatred on religious lines had resulted in an extremely unsafe situation in Delhi, as seen by the detention of a juvenile for attempting to shoot peaceful protesters at Jamia on January 31.
"To appraise the Election Commission, we had sought an appointment two days ago. Till now, we have received no response. It is very unfortunate that BJP derails the poll discourse in Delhi, but Election Commission is silently watching it," Singh said. "If Yogi's remarks about Kejriwal are right, it should be proven. Otherwise, he should desist from talking such things," he added.
Talking to reporters, Singh said, "If the EC doesn't give time to meet AAP delegates by 12pm on Monday, we will sit on a dharna at the EC office."
The AAP MP said that Yogi had failed in governance and he was not ready to talk about electricity, water, roads, education and health. "He has no positive stories from UP to tell the people of Delhi. Therefore, he tries to divide people on communal lines. How can a chief minister of BJP talk like this?" asked Singh.
Singh said Yogi's remark about "Goli aur Boli" delivered during a public meeting at Narela on Saturday was dangerous. However, Yogi's bullet remarks were made in an altogether different context pertaining to law and order during Kanwar Yatra in UP.
