Punjab: 647 illegal autos seized, drivers cry harassment

The drive against illegal autos is under way since January 27
CHANDIGARH: As many as 647 autos plying illegally in the city were impounded from January 27 till February 2 in the special drive started following the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court.
Data revealed that most of the seized autos (342) were from Punjab. Cops said they were plying without permit or proper documents, a claim that has been contested by the drivers. They alleged traffic cops were challaning them without checking their documents and holding any awareness drive. Anil Kumar, president, Hind Autorickshaw Workers' Union, alleged when they went to meet senior police officials to clear the issue, they were not allowed to see them. "No CNG and LPG filling stations are available in Panchkula. If we come Chandigarh to fill LPG or CNG, cops impound our autos and slap fines of more than Rs 20,000," he said. Drivers suggested the UT administration could impose a tax, like Panchkula, daily for entering the city, as their livelihood depends on autos.
