CHENNAI: With no major cold spells so far, winter, which has been subdued so far, is almost over. Weathermen have forecast the present trend of hot days and warm nights to continue in the coming days due to persisting easterlies.
"Sky condition likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 32°C and 23°C for the next 48 hours in the city," IMD said in its forecast.
On Saturday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2°C at Nungambakkam and 31.8°C at Meenambakkam - 1.2°C and 1.5°C normal.
Experts said the southern region, including coastal cities such as Chennai, experiences above-normal temperatures due to persisting easterlies. Usually, Chennai has cooler nights with temperatures dropping below 18°C or 19°C when cold northerly winds move southwards during January and February.
But this year, easterly winds have been consistently blowing since the end of the northeast monsoon and northerly winds have been absent.
"There's no sign of northerly winds. The present above-normal temperatures will continue. Though the long range forecast for winter for the Indian region was warm, northern regions like Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan have been experiencing extremely cold conditions while the southern region has been warm," said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, Chennai.
