LUDHIANA: The police have found out that an inter-state gang was behind the Ghumar Mandi robbery and are trying to trace the link of a local informer who had passed on the information on the jewellery godown to the gang.
During investigation, cops have found that not even nearby shopkeepers were aware of any such godown in the market.
On Wednesday, four armed robbers had barged into the jewelery godown in busy Ghumar Mandi market and escaped with 2kg gold jewellery after taking the owner and worker at gunpoint. Two accused were also captured in the CCTV camera and city police had also announced Rs 1 Lakh rewards to informer.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (detective) Dayama
Harish Kumar said an inter-state gang is behind this robbery. During investigation, the police have identified that most of the nearby shopkeepers were not aware of the jewellery godown in the market. It is suspected that the gang must have their local informer who had passed on the information.
The official said the police teams are on the job to track down the accused.
On asking if role of owners is also suspected, the officials said that nothing such has been found so far.
The ADCP said another robbery of gold jewellery had been executed in Phagwara too and the police are getting details of that incident too.
Talking about the security of such godowns, the ADCP said, “Once the case is solved, the police will conduct a meeting with the jeweller associations to ensure they have security guards. Besides, they should also have DVRs of CCTV at some other place as accused take away the CCTV recorder before fleeing.”
