Police guards at one of the shops targeted on Saturday afternoon
MUMBAI: Two businessmen and their employees had a lucky escape when a masked man opened fired at two shops in Malad (east) on Saturday. The firings took place within 10 minutes of each other. The police said local goon Uday Phatak, main accused in the Kurar quadruple murder case, was behind it.
In the first case, a bullet shattered glass shelves of the medical store. In the other, a bullet whizzed past the owner of an imitation jewellery shop and hit the roof.
The masked man first walked into Anand Medical & Book Center around 1.30 pm and opened fire when the owner Sunil Singh and three employees were present. "He pointed a gun, his hands trembling when he pressed the trigger."
"After firing, he threw a chit at me in which my brother's name was scribbled in Hindi. He demanded extortion money,'' said Singh.
The assailant then targeted Rokadia Traders. Akash Jain told TOI, "My brother Vikas was near the counter when the man pointed a gun. As he fired, Vikas ducked. The bullet pierced the roof."
DCP D S Swami said a team from Kurar police station is probing the case.
