Delhi: 22-year-old dies cleaning sewer, another injured

The deceased has been identified as Ravi
NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old man died after inhaling toxic fumes while another person fell unconscious while they were cleaning a sewer line in east Delhi's Karkardooma on Sunday afternoon. The workers were not wearing any protective gear. The contractor of the workers is currently absconding.
Police have registered a case. According to police, a sewer line located in the parking lot of CBD grounds was being cleaned by workers since Saturday.
PM Narendra Modi is likely to address an election rally here on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Ravi and the injured as Sanjay (35).
The contractor, Shanky, had forced five workers to clean the clogged sewer. Since the sewer was 15-feet deep and they did not have any safety gears, the workers had refused to go in, but the contractor forced them to enter it. As per police officials, Ravi entered the sewer first using a rope but inhaled toxic gases. When he did not come out after a few minutes, Sanjay entered the sewer to look for him. When even he did not return, the remaining workers were scared to enter.
Police and the fire department were informed, who then rescued the two and took them to Hedgewar hospital, where Ravi was declared brought dead and Sanjay was referred to Lok Nayak Hospital, where he has been put on a ventilator and his condition is stated to be critical. The sewer line was closed for some days and a private contractor was asked to get it cleaned. Shanky then called Ravi, Sanjay, Monu, Deepak and Rajeev from New Sanjay Amar Colony to clean the sewer. He told them they would get Rs 350 each for the work.
Five of them worked on Saturday as well but the sewer could not be cleaned. The contractor then forced them to go inside and clean it. Around 12.30pm on Sunday, Ravi entered the sewer but fell unconscious inside. Sanjay entered later and he did not return as well. The remaining workers panicked and informed the locals and the police. Fire officials then went inside with oxygen cylinders and rescued the two. None of them had any masks or any safety gear. Shanky later fled after the labourers called police.
Initial probe revealed that Shanky did not pay them for working on Saturday, which is why they worked on Sunday. The deceased resided with his family in D block of New Sanjay Amar Colony. His family was looking for wedding prospects for him.
