CHENNAI: Eight Chinese citizens who arrived in Chennai on Saturday were admitted to an isolation ward in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital after one of them was found suffering from fever and cold during screening at the airport here.
Health secretary Beela Rajesh said the Chinese citizens had come from Guangdong Province in China, which is nearly 800km away from Wuhan, the epicentre of coronavirus outbreak.
Doctors treating these Chinese citizens said their condition was stable. Healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses and other paramedics, have been given masks, gloves and other personal protection equipment.
Samples, including nasal swabs, have been sent to the King Institute for Preventive Medicine in Guindy. "Results are expected this evening," said director of public health Dr K Kolandaswamy.
Five Indians, who arrived in Tamil Nadu from abroad, have been admitted to various government hospitals in the state after they complained of flu-like symptoms.
Two of them have been admitted to GH in Chennai. One patient has been admitted to Ramanathapuram GH while another one has been admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital is in Trichy. One patient was admitted to GH in Thiruvannamalai.
On Sunday evening, a stakeholders’ meeting was held at King Institute here on prevention and management of the virus.
After the meeting, health minister C Vijaya Baskar said 5,543 passengers had been screened for coronavirus infection in the state.
“If passengers are from Wuhan, we draw samples even if they are not showing symptoms,” the minister said.
He said five samples had been sent to King Institute here while four had been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. Results were expected in 48 hours, he said.
The minister said nearly 800 people had been quarantined at home. Around 650 of them were from China (both Indians and Chinese). “Health experts visit them every day. They are symptom-free,” he said.
The minister asked people to avoid travel to China.
