Chandigarh: Traffic cops seize 606 autorickshaws in 5 days

Impounded autorickshaws at Sector 23 traffic park.
CHANDIGARH: In a special drive, the UT traffic police impounded 606 autorickshaws between January 27 and 31 in the city.
Besides this, the cops challaned around 850 auto drivers for offences including wrongly stopping on roads, parking on cycle tracks, footpaths and using mobile phones while driving.
As per the traffic police data, 135 autorickshaws were impounded on January 27, while 176 were seized January 28. The number of impounded three-wheelers on January 29 was 87. Around 120 autos were confiscated on Thursday and 88 seized on Friday.
However, the massive vehicle impoundment has given rise to another problem: Where to park so many autorickshaws.
Lack of space has left the traffic department in a fix. Besides this, traffic cops are also struggling after seizing these three-wheelers as they don’t know how to ride them. Many are seen pleading the auto drivers to drop the confiscated vehicles at traffic police lines or children traffic park.
Just three days into the special drive against auto drivers, cops impounded 398 vehicles and parked them in Sector 29 traffic police lines and children traffic police in Sector 23. While talking to TOI, the traffic police inspector said our force can impound the 50-80 autos daily, but where would we park them. Traffic line premises are already packed with seized vehicles and now the traffic park is full too. “Besides the parking problem, another issue is that cops don’t know how to drive these three-wheelers, so they are forced to seek help from other auto drivers to take the seized vehicles to traffic lines,” the inspector added.
“A few days ago, we seized 12 autorickshaws at a check post near Hallomajra, but since nobody from the staff knew how to ride those autos, we requested a driver from the nearby autorickshaw stand to park the seized autos at police lines,” the inspector said.
The traffic police said they had been receiving hundreds of complaints on Facebook, Twitter and their Whatsapp number about autorickshaws drivers stopping in the middle of the road at their own will and even parking illegally, which often led to traffic congestion and sometimes accidents across the city.
