PATNA: A group of villagers torched a shop selling construction materials and set four vehicles parked in front of it on fire at Neori village under the Bihta police station area in western Patna on Saturday. The villagers alleged that one Mahesh Yadav was running the shop from government land.
According to locals, Mahesh had opened the shop at the disputed site after entering into an agreement with an ex-serviceman, who had identified himself as the owner of the land. The villagers had asked Mahesh several times to vacate the land, but to no avail.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot after the incident to bring situation under control. Neora police outpost incharge Santosh Kumar said a tractor, an SUV, an autorickshaw and a bike were torched by the villagers.
“At least five people have been detained in connection with the violence,” Kumar said, adding raids were on to arrest those involved in the incident.
Bihta circle officer S K Verma said Mahesh had submitted documents to prove his claim that the then ADM (law and order) had made settlement of the land in favour the ex-serviceman in 1966. “He had attempted to fill up a portion of land after which an encroachment case was registered against him,” he said.
Verma said he had written to deputy collector (land reforms) recently to raise the issue with the present ADM (law and order). “We will now write to the local police to enforce prohibitory orders on the disputed plot,” he added.
