Allahabad: The Union
Budget 2020 evoked a mixed response from Allahabad citizens, most of whom welcomed the provisions for the middle-class and farmers of the country announced by finance minster Nirmala Sitharaman.
Chartered accountant Sunil Singh said, “The message the government tried to send across with this budget was welcoming. It focussed on middle-class taxpayers. All in all, it was a non-political budget which will boost the economy.”
On the other hand, city-based lawyer Manoj Kumar Singh ‘Lokesh’ said the allocations announced this year were disappointing.
“The cost of auto parts and medical devices equipment will go up. There is nothing for lawyers or to ease the struggles of the common man in getting justice. There is hardly anything to talk about in this year’s budget,” he added.
Meanwhile, housewife Pratibha rues the rise in prices of various commodities. “The finance minister announced several measures for farmers and the poor, but what about housewives who are struggling to run households with limited budgets? We have seen prices rises for almost every commodity including fuel. The government also did not say anything about how they plan to bring down the rising prices.”
Businessman Pawan Agarwal, who owns a construction company, said he was happy with the Budget as it sought to increase the spending ability of the common man. “However, I wish there were some provisions for construction and real estate sector, which is often stifled by strict laws,” he added.
Smita, a PhD scholar from Allahabad University, said that the lack of any announcements related to setting up of IITs or central universities left much to be desired from this year’s Union Budget.
“This is budget was mostly for the farming community, but even the salaried class would be happy with the new slabs of income tax,” she added.
Meanwhile, North Central Railway’s chief public relation officer Ajeet Kumar Singh lauded the announcement of new trains, especially the ones on the lines of Tejas.
“There are several announcements made by the Union finance minister in this year’s Budget. However, we would get to know the exact details about how they would affect the NCR only after the release of the pink book,” he added.
