300 long-route buses to operate from new Hosur terminal in Hubballi from next week

Hubballi: The swank bus interchange terminal at Hosur will be inaugurated on Sunday and within a week, about 300 long-route buses will originate from here. Currently, the buses operate from the Old Bus Stand, leading to heavy congestion.
The new terminal, with modern passenger amenities, has been developed at a cost of Rs 60 crore under the BRTS project. It comprises 28 platforms, including six for BRTS feeder buses. The terminal has six lifts, two escalators and four air-conditioned lounges. The terminal was to be operational last year but was delayed due to technical reasons, sources said.
“Once the Hosur terminal is inaugurated on Sunday, the formalities for shifting long-route buses will be expedited. Within a week, all long-route buses will be diverted to Hosur from the Old Bus Stand,” Santosh Kumar, chief traffic manager of NWKRTC’s Hubballi division told TOI.
For some years now, the Old Bus Stand had been grappling with increasing traffic. Long-route buses bound for various destinations from Hubballi go via the Old Bus Stand from New Bus Stand as passengers were reluctant to travel to the latter to board the buses. This led to traffic congestion and huge crowds at the Old Bus Stand as it handled hundreds of trips every single day.
With the new terminal in operation, buses bound for Koppal, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Gadag, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Davangere and Haveri, among other routes, will originate from here. In the first phase, 300 long-route buses will be shifted; this will not include those bound for Bengaluru. In the later phases, Kumar said, roads will be upgraded and all buses will be shifted to Hosur.
Eventually, the terminal is also likely to serve as an interchange for city-bound buses.
“Over the next week, we will announce and publicise the shifting of about 300 long-route buses to Hosur so that passengers are not inconvenienced or caught off-guard,” Kumar said. “Once the terminal starts functioning, we will monitor it closely to deal with other problems that might rise, such as a potential bottleneck at Hosur junction,” he said.
