PUNE: Several ongoing infrastructure projects, technology upgradation and
smart city projects of civic bodies will provide internship opportunities to
engineering students.
The
Union Budget 2020 includes a proposal to start a programme whereby urban local bodies across the country would provide internship opportunities to fresh engineers for up to one year.
Representatives of engineering colleges said that students would be able to contribute to the city’s infrastructure development through the initiative.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) too had suggested a move in the same direction nearly two years ago.
Chairman of ASM Educational Group Sandeep Pachpande said, “Throughout last year, we came across a number of reports suggesting the skill inadequacy of our graduate students when it comes to performing at the workplace and the implications were quite alarming. This initiative will not only help graduates get involved in the development of the society and enrich their knowledge through hands-on experience, but it will also lead to the infusion of a technologically proficient generation into the system that will give birth to fresh ideas.”
Pachpande further said that he hoped the same privilege would also be extended to other fields of study in the near future.
Additional municipal commissioner Rubal Agarwal shared, “The engineering students will definitely be an asset for the local bodies. There are so many ongoing development projects in every local body. The students will be able to understand and take in information related to these projects. Their skills and knowledge could also be utilized by the municipal corporations, so it will be a give-and-take process.”
Local bodies take on numerous public programmes yet they often lack the proper manpower. The one-year internship could help students plan their future and their careers in a better fashion, said Agarwal.
