CHENNAI: A retired police head constable on Friday threw a chemical on the face of his
pregnant daughter and attacked her in-laws when they tried to rescue her in Tiruvallur. The woman and her in-laws who intervened suffered burn injuries in the attack.
Police said B Deepika married her boyfriend B Saikumar last year against the wishes of her father. Saikumar, a resident of Veppampattu, works as an AC mechanic. He fell in love with Deepika a few years ago when they were neighbours.
But her father Balakumar was opposed to the match and moved his family from Veppampattu to Tiruttani. He began to look for a groom to marry off Deepika. But the woman left her family and married Saikumar. The couple moved to Bengaluru after that.
After Deepika conceived, Saikumar brought her to his parent’s house in Veppampattu. When Balakumar got the news, he went to Saikumar’s house and told his daughter that her mother was unwell. He asked Deepika to accompany him to Tiruttani.
After Deepika refused, Balakumar left the house but returned with three men and smeared her face with the chemical.
Hearing Deepika screaming for help, her mother-in-law Bhagyalakshmi and her sister-in-law Divya came to her rescue. The men threw the chemcal on the other two women.
Balakumar and his accomplices threatened Deepika’s neighbours and forced her into a vehicle. Saikumar’s father Balaji alerted the Sevvapet police station about the incident.
With police on his tail, Balakumar pushed Deepika on the road near the Veppampattu bus terminus and fled. Police and neighbours rescued Deepika, who, along with the other two women, had suffered burns. The three were admitted at a government hospital in Tiruvallur.
Police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for Balakumar and his accomplices. Police have sent samples of the chemical, that was used in powder form, for analysis.
