Coimbatore: Five teams of students from 100 government schools in the district would present their survey findings at a state-level event on February 6, in Namakkal. They had conducted the surveys as part of the improving participation (Impart) scheme conducted by Samagra Shiksha.
Officials said under the scheme, five teams were formed to do a survey on a particular topic from a subject. Each team would do a survey or a research on a topic from one of the five subjects: English, Tamil, Maths, Science and Social Science.
“Students had chosen topics such as problems faced by children of migrant labourers in their education, body mass index and nutrition, old age people who are not supported by families and the trend of liquor consumption. They had interviewed a sample-size of 50 people each and have produced a survey report,” said the official.
From the initial 500 teams across 100 schools in all 15 blocks, 75 teams — five from each of the 25 blocks — were shortlisted. From among these, on Friday, one team, each for one subject, were selected. These teams would represent the district at the state-level Impart event, said the official.
The Impart scheme mainly aims to reduce dropout rates. “We encourage students who are vulnerable of dropping out of school to take part in the scheme. We provide a fund of Rs 500 for each project,” said the official.
The schools selected for the state-level event are: Government Higher Secondary School, Mettupalayam in Tamil, Government Higher Secondary School, Velliangadu, in English, CCMA Girls Higher Secondary School, Raja Street, in Maths, Government High School, Arasampalayam, in Science and Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Chinnathadagam in Social Science.
