PUNE: Monsoon withdrew from the city on Tuesday, around 14 days later than its normal date, and it is likely to bid adieu to the entire country on Wednesday or Thursday.
Barring a small portion in the south of the state, monsoon has withdrawn from almost all of
Maharashtra. Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, IMD, Pune, said, “Monsoon has not withdrawn from the entire state yet because it still has to withdraw from the extreme south Konkan. Already, easterly wind pattern has settled in parts of the state, including Pune, from where monsoon has withdrawn. On Tuesday, Pune saw a drastic reduction in moisture content, indicating monsoon’s withdrawal.”
He said the cloud cover had also reduced over the city from the average of 6 okta on October 13 to less than 3 okta on October 15.
The city’s tryst with rain might not be over with the exit of monsoon because light rain with thundery activity has been forecast for October 18. Light rain is also likely on the subsequent three-four days.
“Moisture levels may go up again during the upcoming period, but those rainfalls will be a part of the post-monsoon season. A system is likely to shift/form over the central Madhya Maharashtra and adjacent areas of Marathwada and
Vidarbha, causing moisture incursion over the state. High temperature, associated with high moisture, will trigger thundery activity, lightning and convective rain in Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan and Goa, especially in the afternoon,” Kashyapi said.
The Met department on Tuesday said monsoon withdrew from the entire north Bay of Bengal, some parts of central Bay of Bengal, entire Odisha, Chhattisgarh, some parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, some more parts of Telangana, entire Vidarbha, Marathwada, some parts of north interior Karnataka, most parts of Madhya Maharashtra, some more parts of Konkan, entire north Arabian Sea and some parts of central Arabian Sea.
The IMD said conditions were becoming favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some more parts of central Bay of Bengal, some more parts of south India, remaining parts of west India and some more parts of central Arabian Sea during next 24 hours.
“Thereafter, conditions will become favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of the country and simultaneous commencement of the northeast monsoon rain over the southeast India during the subsequent 48 hours,” IMD said.
