Ford Is Making Connected Car Tech Free For Owners

Modern vehicles are equipped with an assortment of connectivity features, but the sad truth is that using them typically costs extra.

Ford is looking to change that as they have announced that the FordPass and FordPass Connect service is now free. This means owners won’t have to pay anything to start and stop their vehicle or lock/unlock doors using a smartphone.

This is a boon for consumers as Ford says they’re the “first full-line automaker to offer its remote vehicle features and connected service complimentary to all customers on select model year vehicles equipped with FordPass Connect.” While the features aren’t new, Ford noted GM owners can end up paying $14.99 per month for similar services. Likewise, Toyota charges customers $8 per month.

Besides the aforementioned features, the service allows owners to remotely check fuel and fluid levels, schedule maintenance at participating dealers and chat with Ford Guides. Users will also be enrolled in FordPass Rewards which is a customer loyalty program that allows owners to gain points which can then be redeemed for complimentary parts, maintenance and service at dealerships.

While the move means Ford will miss out on subscription fees, the company sees the technology as an important way of improving the ownership experience and building customer loyalty. As Ford’s Jason Sprawka explained, “This approach truly sets us apart in the industry. We know that keeping our customers connected and engaged is key to building a deeper relationship with them.”
