THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The campus of
St Mary’s Higher Secondary School,
Pattom, has been declared plastic-free. The declaration was made by principal
Fr C C John in a special school assembly attended by around 13,000 students on Tuesday.
Fr John said that the school has joined the global environmental movement demanding a better future and better earth. He also announced the mission of setting up a carbon-neutral campus.
All the staff members and students of the school vowed to shun plastic. All plastic equipment in the school will be replaced with other durable materials as part of the zero waste programme. The school will discourage use of plastic wrappers to bring lunch. Students will be encouraged to carry lunch in a steel tiffin box and water in steel/glass bottle. The principal said that plastic items will not be allowed in the school. Use of paper pen will be promoted instead of disposable plastic pen.
Around 100 trees will be planted on the campus as part of carbon-neutral school programme. A campaign to encourage students to plant trees on the premises of their houses is also going on. A major programme to distribute saplings among students will be organized soon as part of the campaign titled ‘Trees for house’.
