Kanpur: Kanpur zoo lost an adult male
tiger Abhay late on Tuesday evening.
Abhay, aged 15 years and seven months, died due to old age, said zoo vets who conducted necropsy on Wednesday. The lifespan of a tiger in captivity is 14 to 18 years, whereas it lives for 12 years in wild.
Senior zoo vet, RK Singh said blood sample of the deceased tiger has been collected by a team from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly and taken along, for further tests to ascertaining the exact cause of death. However, he said that prima facie it appears that Abhay died of old age.
The necropsy was conducted by a panel of vets including Dr AM Pawde from IVRI, Dr Richa Rathore, Dr UC Srivastava and Dr RK Singh in presence of Director, Kanpur zoo Sunil Chaudhary, Curator AK Singh, Vinita Singh, Assistant Conservator of Forest IP Yadav and Biologist Dr RK Dwivedi. The tiger’s carcass was burnt after necropsy in presence of the zoo director, said Dr Singh.
Abhay had cataract and had lost all his teeth due to old age, he said. Abhay was brought from Junagarh zoo in Gujarat in 2010 along with tigress Trusha. He fathered two litters of three each with Trusha. He was in zoo hospital since May 2019 due to old age health problems, zoo vets said. He consumed meat till intervening night of October 14 and 15 and died on October 15 evening.
