The Swans, despite meeting with Joe Daniher at the home of chief executive Tom Harley and convincing him to request a trade north despite having a year to run on his contract, failed to land the player.

Slightly complicating the picture was the fact that Daniher had managed only 11 games over the last two seasons. Regardless of any ongoing groin injury concerns the Swans offered a significant contract to the former All-Australian.

Daniher will now have to return to Tullamarine and see out the final year of his contract before becoming a restricted free agent at the end of next season.

Essendon list boss Adrian Dodoro has spoken to media at Marvel Stadium.

He said the Bombers went into the trade negotiations with Sydney with an open mind but set "some really clear parameters" for the Swans from the start.

"We stuck to our principles, but unfortunately we couldn't get the deal done with Sydney," he said.

He confirmed that Essendon had never been offered the Swans' pick five, or any elite players from the Swans.

He said he had spoken to Daniher "an hour ago" and said the forward was disappointed. But Dodoro said Daniher was a "resilient young man".

"Knowing him and his character he'll come out of this a better, stronger person and we think he'll have a great year next year," Dodoro said.

They came through pretty quickly, so here's a summary of what happened in the last half an hour or so before the deadline.

Alex Keath and a future third-round pick were sent to the Bulldogs from Adelaide. In return, the Crows got pick 45 and a future second-rounder.

Tom Cutler and pick 64 went to Essendon from Brisbane. In return, the Lions sent pick 72 and a future third-rounder. 

Zak Jones went from Sydney to St Kilda. The Saints also received pick 56 and a future fourth-rounder. The Swans received picks 32, 76 and a future third-round pick.

The deal to get James Aish to Fremantle snuck through before the deadline.

Here are the details:

Fremantle send a future second-round pick and a future fourth-round pick to Collingwood. In exchange, the Pies sent Aish, pick 69 and a future third-rounder.

Joe Daniher will play for Essendon next year. Tom Papley has been left stranded at the Swans and Gold Coast Sun Jack Martin's career has been left in limbo.

The Bombers refused to trade their contracted star full-forward to Sydney and will now force the bearer of one of the club's most famous names to return to Tullamarine to play out his contract against his wishes.

Sydney's best offer was pick nine and a future first-round selection, sources said.

The Sydney Swans were unable to seal a deal for a player they had convinced to request a trade to them, despite having a year to run on his contract. He will be a restricted free agent next year.

Giant Aiden Bonar has made his way to North Melbourne along with a future fourth-rounder. Coming back the Giants' way is a future third-rounder.

Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins has found a new home! He and a future third-rounder have been sent to the Cats for pick 37.

Joe Daniher, Tom Papley and Jack Martin deals didn't get done.

Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni says the Blues were told their trade for Papley likely relied on the Daniher trade.

He said the result for the Blues is disappointing but they have a couple of options and could get Martin in the pre-season or national drafts.

He says pick nine was involved in the Blues' offer for Papley.
