MUMBAI: A youth, whose sister allegedly committed suicide, murdered his brother-in-law in the detention room of Nalasopara police station on Monday. Ravindra Kalel (22) from Mhaswad in Satara district slashed his brother-in-law Aakash Kolekar's neck with a knife at 3.45pm. Aakash (24), an auto driver, was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. Ravindra was overpowered and arrested by police.
Aakash had married Komal (20) last year and they resided in Matrachhaya building, Nalasopara (W). An accidental death case was registered after Komal allegedly hanged herself at home on Sunday. Her family arrived from Satara, performed the last rites and reached the police station to record their statement on Monday. Aakash too was called. When Ravindra's father Shankar was recording his statement, Ravindra charged towards Aakash, who was seated on a bench, and slashed Aakash's neck. Police have seized the knife from the spot.
Police said Komal had married Aakash against her parents' wishes and they often fought. Her parents alleged that Aakash tortured Komal for dowry. They alleged that she could not take the mental torture and had told them about the harassment. Komal had not left behind a suicide note.
Aakash's family claimed he was depressed after Komal's death. They said Komal's family interfered in her married life, and she would fight with him over trivial matters.
Ravindra was angry on seeing Aakash at the police station. Ravindra, who hoped to land a job in Mumbai and had often asked Aakash for help, was booked for murder and remanded to police custody.
