Mumbai: Two ‘policemen’ arrested for extortion bid

MUMBAI: Two persons who posed as crime branch policemen and tried to settle a financial dispute were arrested by city crime branch in Borivli on Monday.
Police recovered a car, forcibly taken from the complainant from the two accused, Pankaj Ashok Gupta (28) Kiran Madi Alagan (26).

Police said Tripuati Pulla, a driver employed with a garment trader in Borivli, had taken a Rs 1.5 lakh loan from his employer. Pulla had told this to his friend, Pankaj, who informed his accomplice, Kiran, who then hatched a conspiracy. “Kiran called up Pulla and claimed he was a crime branch officer from Dahisar. He said he was involved in a four kg gold theft case and demanded Rs 2 lakh, or threatened to book him. Pulla got suspicious and immediately started recording the calls and approached a lawyer,” said M D Shivalkar, senior inspector (unit 12).
The two admitted they were trying to scare Pulla and extort money from him.
