CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh administration has received around 2,000 applications for 96 cracker licences. The UT administration had started accepting applications from traders for cracker licences from October 7. The process continued till Tuesday evening.
A senior UT official said that now they will hold draw of lots and accordingly will give 96 cracker licences. Last year, the administration had received a total of 1,043 applications against 96 cracker licences. They will be allowed to sell crackers from October 25 to 27.
This year the Chandigarh administration had even changed the rules while applying for cracker licences in the city.
Unlike previous years, the UT administration this year had asked the applicants to submit affidavit, including three different sets of documents. The move was opposed by traders, who claimed that the administration should also ask for this paper work only from successful applicants after holding draw of lots.

The administration has identified nine sites for selling crackers and will wait for an NOC from the fire department for these sites. If required, they can change these sites after detailed discussion with the departments concerned, an official added.
In 2017, the administration had received 614 applications, but licences were given to 96 traders only. A senior UT official said following Punjab and Haryana high court directions, only 96 licences for setting up crackers stalls were given. The HC had issued these directions to check pollution.
