Surat: The standing committee of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will on Wednesday take a decision on the proposed City Square to be built on 2.62 lakh square feet of land at Udhna -Kharvarnagar. Consultants of the project will make a visual presentation for the members of the standing committee, which will help them arrive at decision on the Rs348 crore project, which has been on shelf for the past 15 years.
Bharat Dalal, city engineer, SMC, said, “The project was conceived so that the city could have something to which its identity can be linked to.”
The 26 floor city square was to be a diamond and textile hub, but the project failed to take off due to a number of reasons. Now the civic body, which is controlled by BJP, is keen on building a business hub in association with a private partner. The City Square will have an assembly space, an art gallery, fountains with laser show, landscape gardening, picnic spot and be a specialized commercial centre of the city.
SMC has already appointed consultants, designers and architects for architectural designs and drawing, techno-financial feasibility study, construction supervision etc.
A month ago, a proposal was submitted for approval to the standing committee, but it insisted on seeing a visual presentation on the project before taking any decision on it.
Standing committee chairman Anil Goplani said, “We will take a decision on project after seeing the presentation. If we feel the need, we may suggest changing the spot for the construction of the City Square.”
The present site of City Square happens to be just 500 square metres from central, Limbayat and Udhna zones of the city. It is also well connected with BRTS.
Floor Space Index (FSI) of 4.00 will be available under new common General Development Control Regulations. This will give massive boost to development in this area, experts said.
