Coimbatore: A truck carrying rice and other essential commodities to a ration shop got stuck on the mud road at Azath Nagar in Karumbukadai on Tuesday morning. It took hours of struggle to free it.
It has been nearly two years since the corporation dug up the roads in the area to lay pipelines for the underground drainage (UGD) project and to provide household water connections, said Peer Mohamed, a resident. “But the roads are yet to be re-laid. Instead of restoring the dug-up portions properly, they just covered it with debris. That is why the tyres of heavy vehicles sink on the stretch,” he said.
A vehicle carrying provisions to the ration shop at Cheran Nagar also got stuck about six months ago. “We have stopped using the route because of this,” said Raja, a worker transporting commodities to ration shops. “We had been using an alternative route through Anna Colony. But due to continuous rain in the region, that road has also become sludgy. Heavy vehicles can’t use the road anymore.”
Even pedestrians find it difficult to use the road after a rain, said Boomila, another resident. “The road becomes slippery and it becomes really difficult to walk without losing balance. Also, as most of the houses are below the road level, water enters houses.”
A similar situation prevails at Cheran Nagar, Anna Colony, Ponvila Nagar and other areas of Karumbukadai.
Though they filed a petition to the city corporation, the officials took no action to repair the roads, the residents said.
A corporation official promised to relay the roads after the UGD work is completed.
