SURAT: A tuition teacher from
Valsad was convicted for the murder of his 21-year-old girlfriend,
a software developer, and sentenced to life imprisonment by the court of principal district and sessions judge on Tuesday.
The convict Shivkiran alias Chiku Kishore Shashan, 35, had set the woman Bhavna Maurya, his former student, on fire and later strangled her to death in August 2015in a hotel at Dumas beach. He killed the woman suspecting that she would not marry him due to family pressure.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment by R K Desai, principal district and sessions judge.
“Considering the strong scientific and forensic evidence, police investigation and arguments by prosecution, the court convicted the accused. Prosecution demanded death sentence but it was rejected since the case does not fall in category of rarest of rare,” said Rinku Parekh, public prosecutor.
A day before the crime, Shashan and Maurya had started from Valsad on his bike and went to Tithal. On way, Shashan had already got petrol in a plastic bottle from a pump in Valsad. After arriving here, they stayed in the hotel and within few hours he killed Maurya.
They first got physical and later Shashan sprinkled petrol on her and torched her using a matchbox. When she ran towards the bathroom, he jumped on her and strangled her to death. Noticing smoke, hotel staff knocked the door and Shashan opened it. When the hotel staff asked him what did he do he replied, “I freed her from trouble.”
Hotel staff called 108 ambulance and fire. Paramedics declared Maurya dead at the spot.
Police investigation revealed that Shashan had developed friendship with the woman when she used to study at his tuition class in 2009. Maurya’s parents came to know about the relationship after which her father had submitted an application in police at Valsad police station against Shashan. Maurya’s family was against the relationship while Shashan was pressurising her to keep relations.
Police had produced CCTV footages of the duo while arriving in city at Bhatia Toll Plaza, Dumas crossroad and other locations to prove that they were together. Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) confirmed identity of Maurya whose face was distorted after burning.
