PANAJI: The Corporation of the City of Panaji, which is set to float a tender for pay parking in the capital city, has fixed the minimum annual rent expected from the contractor at Rs 45 lakh, but will award the contract to the highest bidder.
The CCP also decided to introduce clauses in the new tender after the last pay parking contractor failed to pay the cash-strapped corporation its dues, which ran into lakhs of rupees. The case continues to be fought in court.
Around 520 four-wheeler parking spaces on five roads will be converted into pay parking slots. While most four-wheeler slots on 18th June road and AB road are already marked, the work of marking the slots on the Clube Gaspar Dias to Sharada Mandir road, around the Garcia de Orta municipal garden, and the stretch between Down the Road and the Old secretariat will be entrusted with the pay parking contractor, Madkaikar added.
The pay parking timings will be from 9am to 9pm on all these five stretches, except on the one from Down the Road to Old Secretariat, where it will be 24 hours, considering congestion by casino vehicles. “The pay parking tickets will not be issued manually, but through a hand-held machine. We are also insisting on uniforms for workers,” Madkaikar said. Two wheelers will not be charged for pay parking on these roads.

The rates (of Rs 20 for the first hour and Rs 15 for every additional hour) are yet to be notified by the North Goa collectorate.
“We expect pay parking to begin by mid-October if everything goes smoothly,” he added.
