KOLKATA: The Jadavpur police on Monday registered an FIR against Union minister
Babul Supriyo after an arts student levelled charges of wrongful restraint, assault, molestation and criminal intimidation against him. According to the police, this is the sixth FIR registered in the
JU fracas, but the first involving the Union minister.
Babul on Monday chose not to react to allegations by a Sanskrit College student, Debanjan Ballav, that he had attacked the former in ‘self-defence’. Ballav alleged that his sick mother was being drawn into politics over it.
Speaking to reporters on the JU campus, Ballav said, “I have done nothing wrong. I was attacked. I acted in self-defence. The image that is being circulated by the BJP IT cell captures my attempts to wriggle free and is misleading.” He said, “They are taking advantage of my absence from home (in Burdwan) and playing politics over my mother’s sickness.”
A private news channel quoted him saying that he would not react to this. Responding to Ballav’s comment, Babul tweeted, “Sob kichhute react nai ba korlam bhai(What is there to react in everything).”
Earlier, Ballav’s mother, a cancer patient, had pleaded with Supriyo with folded hands to spare her son. The video that went viral prompted Supriyo to assure her that he won’t take any step against Ballav. Supriyo said he was hoping that Ballav — who is not a student of the varsity — will learn his lesson from the entire episode and realize his mistake.
