PATNA: Patna University (PU) is facilitating women’s empowerment in its own way. The number of female faculty members joining the university is increasing considerably and that of girl students has already exceeded boys’.
More than 90 new faculty members have joined different colleges and postgraduate (PG) departments of PU as assistant professors, following their selection by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) during the last couple of years. Almost two-thirds of them are women. This was evident at their reception hosted by PU at a public function at Patna College recently. The attendance of female teachers was quite discernible in the college’s conference hall.
Earlier, only few female teachers were visible in PG departments and colleges, except the ones labelled as girls’ colleges. “Now, however, they will be seen everywhere on the campus and are also becoming principals of colleges and heads of PG departments,” Patna College sociology department head and Patna University Teachers’ Association president Randhir Kumar Singh told this newspaper.
So far as the students are concerned, girls have already broken the glass ceiling in the field of higher education by outpacing boys. “This year, PU colleges received a record number of applications for admission in their undergraduate (UG) courses and most of the applicants were girls. More than 60% of all the students enrolled in different UG courses this year are girls,” said PU vice-chancellor Rash Bihari Prasad Singh.
In most of the PG departments of PU, girls outnumber boys. As per data given in the last annual report of PU, the percentage of girls admitted to PG courses in all the faculties taken together is nearly 70. In departments like sociology, psychology, zoology and botany, one will find only few boys amid the crowded girls.
Women have not only made their presence felt in every institution of PU, but also created a niche for themselves by their remarkable performance. Almost all the top positions in university examinations are invariably grabbed by girls.

Girls outsmarted boys in both UG and PG exams of PU in 2018.
“As many as 28 of the 40 gold medals, which were to be awarded to the toppers of three-year-degree honours examinations on the occasion of PU’s Foundation Day on October 1, were given to girls. In PG examinations, too, 31 of the 42 gold medals were given to girls on May 30. If one goes through the list of gold medallists of PU, it will be clear that the university may soon become a case study of women’s empowerment,” said Patna College former principal Nawal Kishore Chaudhary.
