All vehicles entering Nanguneri constituency checked as model code is in force

As filing of nomination for the October 21 byelection to Nanguneri Assembly constituency commenced on Monday, not even one set of papers was received.

Although the officials, including District Supply Officer, the Returning Officer of the election, and the Nanguneri tahsildar, and the Assistant Returning Officer, were ready in the Nanguneri taluk office since 11 a.m. to receive the nominations, no one turned up.

District Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish, who inspected a few polling stations in the constituency on Monday along with Superintendent of Police P. Ve. Arunshakathikumar, said all arrangements were in place to receive nominations from the candidates till September 30 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Three vehicles, including the candidate’s vehicle, would be allowed to enter the taluk office premises where nomination papers could be submitted. Only four persons can accompany the candidate while filing the nomination.

Vehicles checked

As the model code had come into force, vehicle checks were being conducted across the district to curb the movement of unaccounted cash, gifts and so on.

Later, Dr. Arunshakthikumar visited some of the 36 “vulnerable booths” in the Assembly segment, including the polling stations at Marukaalkurichi, Manjankulam, Moolaikkaraipatti and a few more places.

Meanwhile, private vehicles entering the constituency were checked thoroughly by the flying and static squads deployed across the segment.

The posters of political parties pasted at public places and the graffiti were being removed.
