VW Launches Development And Production Of Battery Cells In Salzgitter’s Pilot Line

Volkswagen has launched the pilot line of its new cutting-edge battery cell production facility in Salzgitter, Germany.

The initial phase involves some 300 experts in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cells. Construction of a 16 GWh joint manufacturing facility with Swedish battery producer Northvolt is scheduled to start in 2020 in the same location, with production set to commence in late 2023 – early 2024.

More than 1000 jobs will be created by 2024 for testing and producing battery cells – 300 in VW’s development center and pilot line and 700 in VW’s joint venture with Northvolt.

“By pooling know-how at this site, we are making sure we drive forward our own activities to further advance the development of battery cells as a key component in electrification, develop new standards and swiftly transition them to series production,” said Dr. Stefan Sommer, Member of the Volkswagen AG Board of Management.

VW Group’s new battery cell business will be used for supplying their upcoming electric vehicles in cooperation with the company’s suppliers. The development center will focus on a wide range of activities, including increasing capacity to extend the driving range, reducing the use of scarce raw materials, optimizing the manufacturing processes and recycling battery systems.

“We already develop and manufacture power electronics, battery systems, electric motors and charging systems, and are building up battery recycling know-how,” said Thomas Schmall, Chairman of the Board of Management of VW Group Components. “With the integration of the battery cell business area, Volkswagen Group Components is on track to becoming a globally leading producer of e-mobility components.”
