“There are two important initiatives, which are in the pipeline for SGH. One of them is to start a new mortuary, where 100 bodies can be preserved. The work of these projects need to speed up. The second project is that of a new building. We are hoping these two projects will be completed in the coming few months,” said Dr Chandanwale.

Moreover, the management of the hospital urges NGOs, companies and individuals to donate generously to the hospital in terms of funding for new equipment, he said.

“We already have a few companies helping students with scholarships. We also urge individuals to come forward with some programmes for deserving students as many of them have financial difficulties. We also have tax exemption under 80G provisions for such donators,” said Dr Chandanwale.

Speaking about the new projects, he said complex spine surgeries for young children are being considered.

Commenting on the rising violence against doctors, Dr Chandanwale said there are new subjects included in the MBBS curriculum.

“Now, students from first year of MBBS will become student doctors in hospitals to understand the functioning and communication needed for medical professionals to interact more effectively with patients. There is also the inclusion of ethics in medical practices, doctor-patient relationships during the foundation courses for the first year MBBS students. We hope that students shall overcome this communication barrier,” said Dr Chandanwale.
