JORHAT: Police on Monday submitted to the chief judicial magistrate of
Jorhat a chargesheet for the
lynching of the Teok Tea estate doctor Deben Dutta. The chargesheet named 32 persons as accused in the killing of the doctor on August 31.
A section of workers of Teok Tea estate attacked Deben Dutta (73), the resident doctor, following death of a worker, Somra Majhi. Dutta, a resident of Jogduar area in the district, succumbed to his injuries at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on August 31.
Jorhat SP Vaibhav Chandrakant Nimbalkar said that after completion of investigation of the case within 24 days, the chargesheet has been filed before the chief judicial magistrate of Jorhat. It has been filed against 32 persons, all of who were arrested in connection with the case and are now in judicial custody.
The killing of the doctor triggered large-scale protests by doctors, with the
Indian Medical Association calling a 24-hour withdrawal of medical services on September 3. IMA demanded a probe into the incident and trial of the case in fast-track court. The state government formed a one-man inquiry committee on September 5 to conduct a probe into the case.
