NAGPUR: 29-year-old Atul Thawre hanged himself at his residence at Netaji nagar on August 20 after being slapped with charges of extortion by Wadi police. Kalamna police, who had registered an offence of abetment to commit suicide, have now arrested two persons holding them responsible for Thawre’s suicide.
It’s learnt that Thawre worked at a liquor bar at Sitabuldi but was fired in May after returning from a four-day leave. Thawre had taken leave to attend marriage of his brother which was scheduled on May 31. He was stunned when one of the bar managers, Shekhar Sonkusre, now behind bars, told him to not come to work. The owner of the bar, Vishal Jaiswal, also a co-accused in the case, is yet to be arrested.
Sources said Thawre slipped into depression after being fired. He was left shattered after coming to know that an offence was registered against him by Wadi police for trying to extort Rs50 lakh, following a complaint by another manager of the bar, Shekhar Borkar. Borkar too is behind bars following his arrest by Kalamna police.
Sources Borkar stated before Wadi police that Thawre was making calls from different numbers by concealing his identity. The complaint was referred to the cyber cell. Cyber cell sleuths too shared their findings with the Wadi police that Thawre may be behind the extortion calls which led to the registration of the offence.
Wadi police did not rush to arrest Thawre but had been probing the allegations against him. It’s learnt that Thawre had approached the court to seek bail. Sources said the high court was hearing his bail plea and the decision is still pending.

Thawre’s family members stated before the Kalamna police that he would repeatedly rue about being left devastated by the FIR. Thawre left behind a suicide note mentioning the reasons which drove him to commit suicide. He had held the managers and bar owner for having ruined his life in the note, police said.
Kalamna police had registered the case as accidental death. Thawre’s family had been pressing for registering an offence against the managers and owner, following which the FIR was lodged.
