BJP finals 35 names, Manohar Lal Khattar from Karnal

Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar
GURGAON: The incumbent BJP has finalized candidates for 35 out of 90 assembly seats in Haryana, where elections are scheduled to be held on October 21. Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar is set to contest from his traditional seat in Karnal, while state party president Subhash Barala is likely to fight from Tohana.
Most of the current ministers, with the exception of one or two, will be repeated from their respective constituencies. Among those who will re-contest are PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh from Badshapur and finance minister Captain Abhimanyu from Narnaund. The first list of candidates is expected to be announced on September 29 or 30, on the first or second day of Navratri.

For the 35 seats where candidates have been shortlisted, there was only one name on the list of contenders. For another 18 seats, the party, during its core committee meeting on Sunday, narrowed down two possible candidates and forwarded them to BJP working president JP Nadda, said Barala. The names will be cleared when the party’s central parliamentary board meets after PM Narendra Modi is back from his US trip.

On the remaining 37 seats, BJP has received applications from several ticket-seekers. For the Gurgaon assembly seat alone, there are around 55-60 aspirants.
BJP national secretary and former Gurgaon MP Sudha Yadav said the applications are under scrutiny. “The candidates will be decided on five grounds – survey conducted by party, feedback from workers, feedback from people, work done by ticket-seekers and their engagement with public,” said Yadav. The party is collecting the applicants’ details from different sources and candidates for the remaining 37 seats could be announced a day or two before the last date of nomination to avoid rebellion.
