2021 F1 Cars To Feature A More Futuristic Front Wing Design

About a month ago, the FIA provided us with our first proper look at a revised 2021 car, albeit one that was far from a finalized design.

Now, F1’s governing body has come up with a new front wing design that’s said to be more futuristic than the one showed during that wing tunnel reveal. Also, this latest iteration of the car is said to feature “more elegant and dramatic front and rear wings.”

Unfortunately, any new imagery is being kept under wraps for now. However, a detailed description of the redesign was given and it sounds pretty good. Apparently, we can look forward to a sweeping front wing, an element on which F1 CTO Pat Symonds and the FIA’s Head of Single Seater Technical Matters, Nikolas Tombazis have been working on for several months.

Compared to that initial design, this latest front wing is also more robust and no longer straight, boasting two sweeping flaps with upwards-pointing endplates (similar to wing tips on passenger planes).

The width of the redesigned front wing is currently two meters (6.5 feet), but its designers are evaluating whether or not they could make it more narrow without negatively impacting turbulence.

Other changes include the nose tip being lowered by roughly 25 mm (0.98 inches), while the chassis itself has been raised. Meanwhile, there’s a higher headrest and roll hoop, a re-profiled floor, tweaked rear brakes and a few gearbox changes.

The FIA will conduct further wind tunnel testing before unveiling their design at the end of October.
