KOLKATA:
Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das was back in the office on Monday, two days after returning home from the nursing home and four days after the campus brawl on September 19.
With the VC back in office, the JU authorities have decided that strict criteria will be set to allow registered organisations to hold events with politicians as invitees. “We will have a brain-storming session soon where we shall set rules to allow events being held inside the campus,” said pro-vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya. He added: “Any organization is allowed to host programmes by applying to the dean of students, who forwards the application to the registrar for a final go-ahead. Some even apply a day before the programme provided auditoriums are available. From now on, we will thoroughly check the contents of events and won’t allow any unregistered organization to host programmes. It will be mandatory for the organisers to submit the speakers’ list.” The elected student unions will be granted permission if they don’t include political personalities as guests.
Among some other measures that JU is mulling, if any case of ransacking or vandalism is reported, the university will lodge an FIR immediately. “We are also planning to appoint a videographer to record proceedings,” said a JU official.
Das, who returned to the campus after being discharged from a nursing home, stayed in his office throughout the day. As the students and teachers of JU geared up to face the protest rally organized by ABVP, Das stayed put and left after the processions and protest marches were over by 3:30pm. He was in touch with pro-VC Bhattacharya, who went outside the campus to receive a deputation from the approaching ABVP agitators. Das, however, refused to speak about the incident or any plans to beef up security measures.
The students were elated with the return of the VC. “He has always been pro-student. Unlike many others, he has never shied away from listening to students’ demands. We were expecting him to be back on campus on Monday as ABVP had announced to hold a protest rally against us,” said Malancha Ghosh, a JU student.
The university has also decided to compensate for the vandalism done by “outsiders” last Thursday. “We have sought a list from the faculty as well as the union and thereafter an amount will be sanctioned,” said a source.
