Mysuru: A sudden spurt in the activity of the
monsoon in
South Interior Karnataka has resulted in
farmers and officials of the agriculture department in the region heaving a huge sigh of relief. A depression in the Bay of Bengal has precipitated
rain in the region, and in the coming week, the rainfall is expected to spread to the entire state.
On Sunday night, Mysuru city received 45mm rain, while low-intensity showers were also reported in the rural parts of the district and neighbouring Chamarajanagar. In Mandya district, heavy showers were reported in Maddur, Malavalli and surrounding areas on Sunday and Monday. Farmers in Mandya and Chamarajanagar, in particular, are delighted with the belated showers, since
standing crops in vast tracts of farmland in both districts were in danger of dying.
Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (
KSNDMC) director Srinivasa Reddy confirmed to TOI that the entire state would receive rain till Saturday. “By Tuesday, we can expect rain to spread to all parts of Karnataka,” Reddy added.
Meanwhile, in an encore to the showers that lashed the city on Sunday night, rainfall continued in Mysuru city on Monday evening. The Mysuru City Corporation’s control room received a few complaints of uprooted trees tumbling down, besides reports of clogged drains from several areas across the city.
