After crossing nearly 18 states, a procession carrying the kharaun or wooden sandals of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak arrived in the city.
The procession commemorates the religious leader’s 550th birth anniversary. The procession started around two months ago on August 1 from Nankana Sahib (now in Pakistan), the birth place of the guru. Other relics that incluse a stone used by him to serve people, a Guru Grant Sahib and a few other items are also being carried as a part of the procession.
On Monday, around 20,000 devotees flocked Gurudwara Dhan Pothohar Nagar at Santacruz, where the palki has been set up for darshan on Sunday, to join the celebration and take blessings. Over 15 Gurdwara Sahib and social organisations came forward to celebrate the occasion.
After Mumbai, the palki will be moving on to Gujarat and Rajasthan, and the journey will conclude on November 12 at Kartarpur.
