MUMBAI: A sum of Rs 44 lakh was stolen from the vault inside the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) reservation office on Sunday. The GRP are not ruling out the possibility of insider involvement as there were no signs of forced entry. CCTV footage is being examined and railway staffers are being quizzed, officials said.
The chief booking supervisor informed senior authorities that cash deposited in the vault on Saturday and Sunday, totalling Rs 44 lakh, could not be found. He discovered this on arriving at work on Monday morning and was directed to lodge an FIR with the Kurla GRP.
“Only three cashiers, who work in shifts of eight hours each, have access to the vault. They are responsible for moving the revenue earned from ticket sales into the vault and later from the vault to be transported through trains. On Sunday, Vinod Pillai worked the 8am to 4pm shift and Sameer Tarabadkar worked the 4pm to midnight shift,” said a GRP officer. It is believed the theft occurred on Sunday.
There are no CCTV cameras inside the room where the vault is located, but there are cameras at the entrance of the reservation office. “There are no signs of criminal interference... we are still examining if it’s a theft, misappropriation or mischief. We are recording what the railway staffers handling the cash have to say. Their statements will be correlated with electronic evidence,” said an RPF officer. The RPF is simultaneously probing the case.
