Hubballi: We’ve all heard of standup comedy and slam poetry performances. But Sunday saw a new kind of improvised entertainment - the standup literature show.
The programme was organized at Nagasudhe Jagali, an auditorium in Kalidas Nagar. It was created when some professionals were inspired by the popularity of stand up comedy shows. The shows have been serialized under the title ‘Kaadu Mallige’ (Jungle Jasmine in English).
The group of literary enthusiasts from various walks of life, particularly from science and technology, who have organized the show, have also uploaded videos of the programme on the Youtube channel ‘Hongirana’ to connect to other people, especially youth interested in literature and culture.
Meti Mailar, an electrical contractor and one of the people behind the initiative, said the troupe ‘Hongirana’ (ray of gold) was formed to bring out people’s hidden talents - writing poems, stories, singing and so on, especially young people who needed opportunities to showcase their talent. “We started this programme in association with a Bengaluru-based online writing team around seven or eight months ago. But they could not continue in Hubballi for some technical reasons. So, we decided to continue it on our own by involving local students. We have received good responses from BE, BCA, BCom students of various districts of North Karnataka,” he said.
Prakash Kadame, the proprietor of Nagasudhe Jagali auditorium, said he was happy to provide the venue free of cost for the programme.
“We plan to invite a noted poet every month. We hope that established poets will share their path to success with our audience, as well as do readings of their own work - or work they found inspirational. From there, we hope the discussions will be free flowing, covering a variety of topics in literature and culture. We are happy that we have received students from Bagalkot, Gadag and other districts for the first standup literature session” he said.
Ravishankar Gadiyappanavar, another organizer, said the ‘Hongirana’ team will film the whole programme and upload it on to its eponymous YouTube channel, so that any one interested can watch it at any time later. “We will also set up a website soon and try to go the live streaming route in future. Our sessions are open for monoacting, folklore songs and so on,” he said.

Mahantappa Nandur, the first poet invited to Kaadu Mallige, said it was an innovative way to cultivate culture. “Many times literature programmes go without documentation. But this initiative documents writers’ interaction with enthusiasts,” he said.
Vishwanath Bulla, a B Com student from Gadag, said the initiative attracted him because it requires active audience participation. KIMS resident medical officer Dr Siddeshwar Katkol, computer science lecturer Vidyadhish Pandurangi, retired principal Bharati Hiremath and others participated in discussion with Nandur and read poems they had written.
