Girls on a par with boys in higher education in Rajasthan

ON RIGHT TRACK: It took eight years for girls to match the level of boys in higher education in Rajasthan
JAIPUR: Girls in Rajasthan have made significant progress in gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education drawing almost an equivalent with boys in the academic session 2018-19.
The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report says girls GER stood at 23% while boys have touched 23.1%, thus attaining almost 100% gender neutrality in higher education. GER is calculated as the percentage of population in the age group of 18-23 enrolled in higher educational institutes.
The AISHE report was released by the ministry of human resources on Saturday. The improvement in the girls’ enrolment rate has helped the state attain a growth in GER higher than the national average. Rajasthan recorded 1.3% GER in last one year, while it was 0.5% nationally.
The growth of 1.3% GER in a year is the highest ever since GER was has been recorded by the government. As per records available, the highest GER difference between the two genders was recorded in 2010-11 and 2011-12 with a huge gap of 5.7%. It took eight years for girls to match the level of boys in the higher education.
The achievement is attributed to a slew of measures taken by the consecutive governments building the foundation by introducing several schemes favouring girls at school level. “Certainly, it is the result of positive efforts made by the government at all levels of education. Special schools for girls, financial aid, free bicycles and the travel vouchers along with the growing awareness among parents have contributed in attaining the success. All these efforts combined together have improved the transition rate from secondary to senior secondary and into the higher education,” said KB Kothari, educationist.
The icing on the cake is girls have improved its tally from the previous year. In one year alone, girls have improved its tally by 2.4% GER while boys have just grown by 0.4%.

State higher education department has made girls education free from this year hoping that it will shoot up the overall enrollments of girls. “This year, we have started 37 new colleges and every third college is only for girls. I am hopeful that next year, girls will surpass the GER with boys scripting history in the country,” said Pradeep Borad, director of College Education Directorate.
The latest figures released by the state government on the gender-wise enrollment of academic session 2019-20 says girls had superseded boys in recording enrollments in government colleges with 2.21 lakh (girls) and 2.07 lakh boys.
